Hotel Gounod is at the the very centre of the lively artistic town of Saint Rémy de Provence. It takes its name from the composer Charles Gounod, who wrote the famous opera Mireille here in 1863. Gounod informs the theme of the whole place: each of the 34 bedrooms-discovered through a labyrinth of corridors-has been decorated to represent a phase of the composeris life. His music plays softly in the comfortable communal areas and in the loos, and a statue oft he Virgin Mary reflects his religious leanings; the effect is theatrical, colourful , diverting and at time marvellously eccentric, bordering on the kitsch. Beds are voluptuous. |
