Surrounding
Nittel:
The wine-producing village Nittel lies in a picturesque location, between high dolomite and chalk cliffs and the winding course of the Obermosel. Its Mediterranean flora and fauna are witness to the warm, gentle climate, wich is particularly favourable for wineculture. Orchids even bloom in 2 nature reserves.
Nittel has about 500 hectares of forest as well as nature reserves and the Eberthälchen lakes and relaxation park. It also is a state-registered tourist and leisure destination. An extensive network of trails for walking and an educational wine route, are an open invitaion to walkers and ramblers. Largerscale tours can be organised with the use of the cyclo paths on the banks of the Mosel. There are possibilties for playing tennis and minigolf, horseriding and fishing.
High above the village you find the St. Rochus chapel, a place of pillgrimage that offers the visitor a broad panoramic view of the Mosel valley. Its exisitence was first documented in 1432. Within the Nittel municipality with it’s 2000 inhabitants, lie the village of Rehlingen and Köllig. Rehlingen is situated in a river valley with a beautiful view across the Mosel. Köllig is characterised by it’s old, well preserved courtyards.
Right on the other side of the Mosel is where the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg lies; France is only 25 km away.
Viticulture
Even before the the days of the Roman settlement, the Treverer Celtish tribe, influenced by the Greeks, is said to have grown grapes on the Mosel. We have the Romans to thank for the further refinement of grape cultivation. The very oldest grape variety on the Mosel is: Elbling.
In Nittel, which with 300 hectares of vines is the largest grape-growing community in the Obermosel, this grape occupies approximately 75% of these hectares and so sets the tone for the region. Nittel’s chalky soil lends the grape a special flavour. Lively, aromatic, stimulating, refreshing and light, this is a dry white wine, which is also well suited te being refined to make sparkling wine.
In addition to the Elbling, Burgundy grapes grown here mature into superoir wines. Auxxerois, white and grey Burgundies grow particularly well in the chalky soil of the Obermosel with streches up to the French Massif Central.
Any wine-lover who wants to get to know the region specialities will find many opportunities on offer in the region’s restaurants. In addition to the yearround selection of wine-growers’ estates, inns and restaurants, lively wine festivals invite you to join in the celibrations. On the first weekend of May, you are invited to the open cellar days, on the last Saturday in May, the Elbling taster day for wine and on the third weekend of August to the St. Rochus wine fair. At the end of June each year, a wine fair takes place in Rhelingen.
